An adult New Patient Examination consists of 2 appointments.

When you see us for your comprehensive initial examination, please plan to be with us for about 80 minutes. During that time, we will collect information from a physical examination of your head, neck, jaws, throat and--last but not least--your mouth.

What to expect on your first visit with us:

  • a review of your medical and dental history so we can be aware of any concerns or problems
  • an oral cancer examination
  • a tooth examination; checking for cracks, decay, and worn restorations
  • gum measurements to determine the health of the gums and bone underneath
  • a TMJ (jaw joint) assessment, to check for inflammation, tenderness, bite problems
  • low-radiation digital x-rays, which show us decay, infection, bone condition
  • digital photographs to magnify our view of your teeth and any restorations
  • a discussion of any concerns or expectations you may have

The dentist will then meet with the Treatment Coordinator to review any treatment that may be necessary for you, and then set-up an order for appointments. You will be given several options for treatment, including none at all. The treatment coordinator will meet with you at your second appointment to discuss these findings and will go over the pros and cons of the various choices so that you can make an educated decision about your treatment. Fees and appointments will also be discussed at this time. Sometimes extra information may be required, such as plaster casts or special x-rays, and these would be taken at this time.
